Homework expectations in Year 6

Each week, homework is set and due in on a Monday. It will normally be expected that children complete:
20 mins per week of Times Tables Rock Stars
5 reads per week
20 minutes of English
20 minutes of maths
This will be a variety of worksheets, online activities and independent working on individual targets.
Marking will be a mixture of online, peer marking and teacher/TA as appropriate. Details of the week’s homework will normally be put on our website on a Monday.

Don’t forget Times Tables Rock Stars and Common Exception words every week.  I check children’s progress on Rock Stars every week, and we will regularly do times tables tests to monitor and celebrate progress.

Spellings:  Spellings are taken from the Y5/6 spelling list and we will be working steadily through this over the next few weeks. The expectation is that children will get at least 7/10 in their Monday spelling tests.

English: Children should now have their own copy of the CGP Spelling Grammar and Punctuation revision book.  Over the next few weeks I will be teaching an element of this in class and then children will be practicing the skill independently for their homework.  I will normally give them some resources to support their understanding at home.  The book contains answers – you might like to remove these and keep separate!

Maths: Again, children will be completing homework in these revision books from now on.  Sometimes I will use them to recap on a topic we have covered, sometimes to prepare them for a topic coming up and sometimes for some revision of topics covered previously in school to support their preparation for SATS.  Normally, I will give children a support sheet to support their learning.

If there are any problems, please either:

Ask your child to talk to me in school – I am available for homework support every lunch time.

Spellings:  This week’s spellings are stuck in your diaries.  They are from the Y5/6 spelling list and we will be working steadily through this over the next few weeks. The expectation is that children will get at least 7/10 in their Monday spelling tests.

English: you should now have your CGP Spelling Grammar and Punctuation book.  Over the next few weeks I will be teaching an element of this in class and then you will be practicing the skill independently for their homework.  This week is a recap: nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs (pages 4,5,6 and 7) – please complete these pages in your book.  The book contains answers – you might like to remove these and keep separate!

Maths: Again, you will be completing homework in these revision books from now on.  Sometimes I will use them to recap on a topic we have covered, sometimes to prepare them for a topic coming up and sometimes for some revision of topics covered previously in school to support their preparation for SATS.  Normally, I will give you a support sheet to support your learning.  This week, I would like you to do the page on BODMAS/BIDMAS, which is revision of a topic recently covered in school.
