Water, water!

This week the school were lucky enough to have a visit from Mr Paul Tingle from Severn Trent. He gave a very amusing assembly on the importance of saving water, which the children really enjoyed.

All children have discussed the possibility of making an effort to try and save water. After this, Year 3 and 4 spent time finding out more facts and dicussing the processes involved in cleaning and recycling our dirty water.
• He gave us a few simple, yet effective ways to save water.
• Turn the tap off when you brush your teeth.
• Have a 4 minute shower.
• Only put toilet paper down the toilet. Paul says, “If it comes out of you, it can go down the loo!”
• Don’t put cooking oil down the drain.

Visit: for free water saving devices. You can order a four minute shower timer from this site as well as many other water saving devices.

Fascinating Facts!
The amount of water on our planet is fixed.
Did you know that earth contains 366 Quintillion gallons of water, which is written like this: 366,000,000,000,000,000,000 gallons. This is (roughly1,260,000,000,000,000,000,000 litres)
97 % of earth’s water is in the oceans. Only 3 % of the earth’s water can be used as drinking water. 75 % of the world’s fresh water is frozen in the polar ice caps.
This precious resource is shared between 7 billion people.
More people have access to a mobile phone than have access to safe water to drink.
In Europe we use, on average, 66 gallons of water per person a day. In Sub-Saharan Africa the average is just 5 gallons a day per person.
