Y5 Furniture Making in Forest School

The Year 5 children, from Lickhill Primary School, were given the challenge to create a piece of furniture which could hold the weight of an adult.  Rob Williams, the Forest School leader, taught the children how to tie knots, use a saw and saw horse, bind lashings and use a mallet.

The children had many fantastic ideas including building chairs, stools, sofas, beds, tables etc.  At the end of the session the different pieces of furniture were put to the test, as Miss Taylor and Mrs Pierpoint bravely agreed to sit on them.  Luckily, the children’s designs and the skills they have acquired were outstanding, and apart from one wobbly stool all the furniture past the test.

On a half termly basis the Year 5 children visit Forest School, while the Pre-school and Reception class visit weekly.  Lickhill Primary is extremely lucky as it has a well developed Forest School area on site.  Rob Williams said, “Forest School is the perfect environment for children to take risks in.  It builds their confidence, enables them to develop life long skills and shows them the importance of working co-operatively in groups.”
